Detention Center Release Paths
Clay County Detention Center is the county’s single confirmed detention facility. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office operates it. A recorded release can mean a community departure after bond, completion of a local term, dismissal, or another court-directed event. It can also mean transfer. MDOC, another jail, USMS, BOP, ICE, or another custodian may receive the person as soon as the Clay County hold ends.
The sheriff’s web card does not distinguish those outcomes. It lists an exact release time, booking time, booking number, charges, bond, photo, and profile. The profile adds the arresting agency. The missing fields are crucial: manner of release, destination, court disposition, case number, receiving agency, and supervision status. State only that Clay County recorded a departure until another record establishes the next step.
| Possible path | Record that confirms it |
|---|---|
| Bond or court release | Jail docket plus bond or release order |
| Local sentence completion | Court judgment and jail calculation |
| State transfer | Penitentiary receipt and MDOC location record |
| Other-custodian transfer | Transfer receipt and receiving-agency record |
| Community supervision | MDOC category and assigned supervision office |
Confirm a Detention Center Release
The Clay County roster choice page provides a current-roster option and an official “48 Hour Release” option. The released feed is stronger than mere absence because it affirmatively supplies a departure timestamp. Its short window still requires a records fallback, and its disclaimer makes agency confirmation important.
- Open the 48-hour released feed and compare the person’s name, booking number, booking time, arresting agency, and release timestamp.
- Check the current roster only to determine whether Clay County still displays the person as held. Do not treat an absent name as proof of release.
- Ask the sheriff for the jail-docket entry, manner of release or discharge, release warrant or order, and any transfer or penitentiary receipt.
- Use the arresting agency and case number to choose Circuit Court, Justice Court, or West Point Municipal Court for the legal outcome.
- Search MDOC, VINE, BOP, USMS, or ICE only when the sentence or custody facts make that system relevant.
The full Clay County released inmate search and record process compares every local, state, and federal route. Keep the booking identifier with each request so similarly named people and separate arrests are not mixed.
Detention Center Release Records
No separate Clay County records-unit page, dedicated request form, or fixed copy fee was verified. A call can identify the recipient, while a narrow written request creates the clearest record. Give the full name, birth date if known, booking number, approximate booking and release dates, and arresting agency. Ask for electronic records and an itemized actual-cost estimate before work that could produce a charge.

Request the jail-docket entry, booking sheet, booking photograph, exact release timestamp, stated manner of release or discharge, release authority, transfer receipt, penitentiary receipt, and case number. If part is exempt, ask for the segregable public portion and the legal basis for each withholding. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, investigative, or safety-related material can be restricted.
Note: The absence of a published Clay fee does not mean copies are free; ask for an estimate before production.
Detention Center Release Docket
Mississippi Code § 19-25-63 makes the jail docket the central historical release source. It requires the sheriff to record the prisoner’s name, commitment date, cause and authority, duration of confinement, and how the prisoner was released or discharged, with the warrant or penitentiary receipt. That is more precise than asking for all inmate records.
The online card remains visible only within the stated 48-hour window. This is web visibility, not an official destruction schedule. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History governs local retention, but research did not establish a precise Clay County detention record period. An older event should therefore be requested by booking number and date, not assumed unavailable.
Clay County Detention Center Facts
The official detention center page says an expansion raised capacity to as many as 160 inmates. It also describes an effort to attain American Correctional Association accreditation. The source does not date the expansion or say the facility earned accreditation, so the two statements should not be enlarged beyond their wording.
The building can hold county detainees, municipal detainees, and state-program placements. No state prison, federal prison, or separately identified ICE detention site was confirmed within Clay County. The Clay Probation & Parole Office is a community-supervision office, not a jail.
West Point Detention Releases
An official 2011 interlocal agreement states that Clay County owns and operates the detention facility and reserves beds there at all times for “West Point inmates.” A West Point police arrest can therefore appear in the county roster and released feed even when the underlying case belongs to West Point Municipal Court. The sheriff owns the booking, custody, photo, and release-timestamp record. The city court may own the disposition.
This shared arrangement explains why the profile’s arresting-agency field matters. It routes a records search. A county felony normally points toward the Clay County Circuit Clerk, while an applicable county misdemeanor or early proceeding can point toward Justice Court. A municipal arrest may require the West Point court. Sending every person to the same clerk can miss the controlling order.
State Prisoners Leaving Clay Detention
The sheriff’s inmate work information documents a Joint State/County Work Program as well as Sheriff Trustys and Jail Support assignments. A person in the Clay County building may therefore remain a state prisoner under MDOC authority. Disappearance from the local display can mean a return to an MDOC facility or another state placement rather than community release.
Search the MDOC inmate system by name or MDOC ID. Read Location, Unit, Location Change Date, sentence rows, and the exact field “Tentative Release Date.” An MDOC facility indicates confinement. An ERS community location means the person may live outside a prison while retaining inmate status and MDOC jurisdiction. A tentative date is a forecast and cannot establish actual discharge.
- ERS
- Earned Release Supervision, a community placement with continuing MDOC jurisdiction.
- Trusty
- A local work assignment described by the sheriff, not proof of release.
- Penitentiary receipt
- A record supporting delivery into state prison custody.
Detention Center Court Release Records
The court file explains what a booking card cannot. Clay County Circuit Court records can contain felony indictments, bonds, judgments, sentences, and later orders. Justice Court handles applicable county misdemeanors and initial proceedings. Ask for the disposition, judgment, bond or release order, and sentence-completion entry. A charge still displayed on a sheriff card is not proof of guilt and does not reveal the final outcome.
A dismissal, acquittal, or court-directed release should be supported by the signed order or docket. A time-served release should connect to the judgment and local calculation. If the record instead points to MDOC, federal, immigration, or another-county custody, use the receiving agency’s status and documents. The Clay departure timestamp and the court order answer different parts of the same event.
Detention Center Release Notifications
Mississippi SAVIN/VINE can provide a specific-person custody check and status notifications for participating county-jail and MDOC records. Select Mississippi, search the exact person, compare the source agency and identifiers, and read custody status, location, and status date as a set. Register for available phone, text, email, or app notices on the matched record.
A VINE “released” or “out of custody” notice is tied to the reporting custodian. It can reflect a departure followed by transfer. Preserve the notice details, compare them with the sheriff’s timestamp, and request the jail docket for a durable historical record. VINE does not replace the release warrant, receiving-agency receipt, or court disposition.
Note: When a notification and sheriff card differ, confirm the source agency and event time before drawing a custody conclusion.
Unpublished Clay Detention Release Details
No official source verified a routine exit time, release door, weekend or holiday procedure, property-return process, family waiting area, transit arrangement, bond schedule, booking fee, pay-to-stay charge, or historical web archive. The detention center’s public card also does not publish release reason or destination. These are precise questions for the sheriff or court, not facts to infer from ordinary jail practices elsewhere.
The same caution applies to online updates. The released page asks the browser to reload after five minutes, but this does not promise that the underlying jail database posts each event within five minutes. A just-completed release may require direct confirmation, and an important destination question always requires the docket or receiving agency.
